Ayo Awosika and Julian Peterson playing at Ubisububi Room this friday, august 8th

Julian combines an old-school appreciation with genre-breaking ideas, to deliver soulful vocals, yearning lyrics, and raw guitar. As a Colorado native, Julian's been living on the east coast for the last six years refining his live show and his music. He and his trio have been
tearing up the scene in the New York City and Boston areas, but at the Thin Man you'll get the rare experience of Julian in a solo setting- just his voice and his guitar.

A classically trained vocalist transferring her aptitude for opera and art song to the world of jazz, Ayo brings new life and interpretation to jazz standards heard many times over. She has aimed to be a musician with more substance, more ability, and more originality than the typical Top 40 radio favorites. She's an artist who has something to say, and with a heritage rooted in West Africa and recent travels that reach Japan, Germany, England, and France, she's been tweaking her style; mixing a love for the complexity and depth of jazz and soul with the honesty and familiarity of folk and roots music, working to find the place where these worlds meet. It seems that Colorado has been just the place to do it, as she has spent the last year writing and playing as much as she can. Joined by special guest Adam Tressler on acoustic guitar, Ayo will present an intimate night of her music in a stripped down, organic setting.

Here at The Thin Man, as friends and band-mates Ayo Awosika and Julian Peterson share the bill, be prepared for a night of great, soulful, acoustic sets and even a few duo tunes!

“I wanna be the one who stares at the sun, and never ever goes blind”. It’s a mission statement as much as a lyric for 28yr old Josh Queen. An extremely personal writer, Queen is armed with an introspective catalog of songs that examines the every day interactions people share and an invigorated passion for connecting with his audience. Queen jump-started his musical career as the singer/songwriter for the SC based band Upstart Jackson in 2001. Following UJ, he embarked on a mission to establish himself as a solo artist, touring the Southeast with his band and recording two EPs, This Is Me Movin’ On and A Life Less Deceiving. “Maybe,” a single from the latter record, won Queen an Honorable Mention in the 2004 Billboard World Song Contest and was included on Alternative Addiction’s Vol. 6 compilation disc. Queen relocated to Denver in 2006 and, as his music picks up steam in his new home state, he is happy to call Colorado home.

ON JUNE 5th: Opening reception for the art show HORNDRIBBLES: Mystery of the Wakatranceplus SIX MONTHS TO LIVE performing an acoustic show

When explorers Duke Perkins and Annabelle Gentils stumble upon the Lost Island of the Wakatrance, they discover danger, addictive berries and cute flying monsters.

Denver artist Lucas Richards has assembled a museum-quality retrospective of the intrepid adventurers' adventures for display at the Thin Man from June 3rd thru July 31st. The exhibit will include mounted specimens of the winged Horndribbles, diary entries penned by Duke and Annabelle, and sketches and paintings that tell the story of their brief stay on this Lost Island of the Mad.

Enthusiastic patrons will be able to purchase the relics, including the adorable Horndribble specimens, which bear a striking resemblance to hand-sewn plush sculptures.

Local indie pop band, Six Months to Live, will perform a rare acoustic set at the Ubusububi room, the Thin Man's basement beatnik venue, for the June 5th opening reception. This opportunity to hear the band’s vocalists harmonize in a tranquil setting is itself worth the trip.

Richards' previous art show, The Horndribble Hunter, was a mighty success (he sold each of more than 30 sculptures). The Mystery of the Wakatrance promises even more thrills.
