on September 10th we'll be showing Carrie at movie night

Director Brian De Palma deftly transfers Stephen King's first novel to the screen. Carrie (Sissy Spacek) is an ostracized girl saddled with a strict mother. But the teen has the ability to move objects with her mind, and when the high school "in crowd" torments her with a sick joke at the prom, Carrie's fury lashes out with devastating power.

This is a really, really impressive film, one of the best and most famous horror films ever made (though De Palma claims it's not horror). Even its very last twist works like a charm, though it really shouldn't. Probably its greatest achievement is to be fun, moving and cathartic when its subject matter could so easily have dragged it down into depressing grimness. Even at the beginning when Carrie's at her lowest ebb, having just been humiliated for freaking at her first period, she gets to telekinetically shove a small kid off his bike for chanting "Creepy Carrie, Creepy Carrie!" Haven't we all wanted to do that?

starting at 9pm, Carrie will be showing at the Ubisububi Room.

THE SHINING!wednesday, august 13th

Stanley Kubrick's The Shining is less an adaptation of Stephen King's bestselling horror novel than a complete reimagining of it from the inside out. In King's book, the Overlook Hotel is a haunted place that takes possession of its off-season caretaker and provokes him to murderous rage against his wife and young son. Kubrick's movie is an existential Road Runner cartoon (his steadicam scurrying through the hotel's labyrinthine hallways), in which the cavernously empty spaces inside the Overlook mirror the emptiness in the soul of the blocked writer, who's settled in for a long winter's hibernation.

As many have pointed out, King's protagonist goes mad, but Kubrick's Jack Torrance (Jack Nicholson) is Looney Tunes from the moment we meet him, all arching eyebrows and mischievous grin. (Both Nicholson and Shelley Duvall reach new levels of hysteria in their performances, driven to extremes by the director's fanatical demands for take after take after take.)

The Shining gets under your skin and chills your bones; it stays with you, inhabits you, haunts you. And there's no place to hide...

Ayo Awosika and Julian Peterson playing at Ubisububi Room this friday, august 8th

Julian combines an old-school appreciation with genre-breaking ideas, to deliver soulful vocals, yearning lyrics, and raw guitar. As a Colorado native, Julian's been living on the east coast for the last six years refining his live show and his music. He and his trio have been tearing up the scene in the New York City and Boston areas, but at the Thin Man you'll get the rare experience of Julian in a solo setting- just his voice and his guitar.

A classically trained vocalist transferring her aptitude for opera and art song to the world of jazz, Ayo brings new life and interpretation to jazz standards heard many times over. She has aimed to be a musician with more substance, more ability, and more originality than the typical Top 40 radio favorites. She's an artist who has something to say, and with a heritage rooted in West Africa and recent travels that reach Japan, Germany, England, and France, she's been tweaking her style; mixing a love for the complexity and depth of jazz and soul with the honesty and familiarity of folk and roots music, working to find the place where these worlds meet. It seems that Colorado has been just the place to do it, as she has spent the last year writing and playing as much as she can. Joined by special guest Adam Tressler on acoustic guitar, Ayo will present an intimate night of her music in a stripped down, organic setting.

Here at The Thin Man, as friends and band-mates Ayo Awosika and Julian Peterson share the bill, be prepared for a night of great, soulful, acoustic sets and even a few duo tunes!
